What Is a Self-Hosted Intranet?

A self-hosted intranet is an intranet that is hosted and maintained on an organization’s own cloud environment. Sometimes also referred to as an on-prem intranet, this allows organizations heightened security and complete control over all aspects of their tech stack, while having all the benefits of a cloud app.

As a result, an on-premise intranet is the preferred option for many businesses, such as Large enterprises with established IT infrastructures, organizations in regulated industries, such as banking, healthcare, and government, and companies with specific data handling and privacy requirements.

What Are the Benefits of a Self-Hosted Intranet?

On Premise and Self-Hosted Intranet FAQs

On-premise and self-hosted intranets are used interchangeably but there’s one key difference. An on-premise intranet is a private, internal network hosted and managed on your organization’s own servers or data centers. A self-hosted intranet is managed on your own cloud, so you have complete control over organizational data without a vendor having access to it.

Organizations that choose on-premise often do so for greater control over data security, customization, compliance requirements, and integration with legacy systems.

Requirements vary based on user count and system complexity. At a minimum, you will need dedicated servers, sufficient storage, backup solutions, and a disaster recovery plan. Here’s our on-premise configuration guide.
